Global Internet Governance doesn’t seem all that sexy, but this panel will explore why it can literally be a matter of life or death. In March 2014, the U.S. announced that it will relinquish oversight over the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). We’ve heard the critics scream that the U.S. is “giving away our Internet to Russia and China,” but is that really the case? Both sides of the IANA transition debate have talked about protecting the open Internet, and making sure that it is preserved as the greatest free speech tool on the planet. This panel explores how Congress is working with entrepreneurs throughout the Internet community to ensure those goals. Giving the Internet Away? ICANN Explained | SXSW 2016 Event Schedule

In 2015, tech companies announced that they would implement increased security measures on their products to strengthen privacy and data security. However, these advancements were met with concern from law enforcement entities, who worry they won’t be able to access information to stop criminals. The conflict has sparked a larger debate in Washington concerning cyber security and how industry can work with the government. This panel features leading voices on the topic with Congressman Will Hurd who serves as Chairman for the Committee overseeing cyber security in the federal government, former and current experts from the White House and cyber-security industry representatives.
