Update on Intelligence Authorization Act
We’ve recently learned that Sen. Feinstein has removed Section 603 from the Intelligence Authorization bill. Â This is a big victory for us, and all those fighting for the Internet. Â This section would have required Infrastructure providers to report “suspected terrorist” activities on their networks. Â The ambiguity in the proposed legislation posed significant privacy problems, and would have contributed to the perception around the world that privacy protections in the U.S. have eroded.
Removal of this provision was our highest legislative priority this fall.  To have this provision removed, we worked closely with aligned organizations like the Internet Association to raise awareness of the problems it posed.  In addition, we met with several Senate staff members.  Our continued legislative successes are attributable to the great support we receive from members, and the hard work done by our policy working group.  Congratulations is due to all of our members and partner organizations who have helped.
