i2Coalition Joins Opposition to Online Monitoring Bill – Online Terrorist Activity Act
Senators Feinstein and Burr recently introduced legislation that would require companies to report to the government instances of terrorist activity taking place on their networks. The i2Coalition opposes this legislation. We oppose the legislation for a number of reasons. The primary reason is that the legislation provides no context for reporting. Infrastructure providers would be required to categorize, analyze and make determinations about content which they have no expertise in. In addition, the legislation provides a template for other countries to use to create laws on filtering and reporting content that may be detrimental to the open nature of the Internet.
