i2Coalition Supports Senator Cornyn’s Patent Abuse Reduction Legislation
Washington, DC – Internet Infrastructure Coalition (i2Coalition) co-founder and Public Policy Working Group Chair David Snead released the following statement following Senator Cornyn’s introduction of the Patent Abuse Reduction Act of 2013:
“i2Coalition applauds Senator Cornyn for taking action to stop frivolous lawsuits by Patent Assertion Entities (“patent trolls”) through the introduction of the Patent Abuse Reduction Act. Senator Cornyn’s legislation would preserve the fundamentals of the patent system, while protecting the hundreds of thousands of businesses that are currently subject to victimization by a handful of people who are taking advantage of a broken patent system. Small to medium-sized businesses do not have sufficient protection from these trolls, and they threaten to stifle the Internet infrastructure industry – an industry which generates an estimated $46 billion in annual direct and indirect revenue. Senator Cornyn’s bill will do much to alleviate these concerns by ensuring that the patent system continues to reward investment in ideas. The more than 60 member companies of the i2Coalition strongly support Senator Cornyn’s bill and look forward to working with Congress to curtail abusive patent litigation.”
