ICYMI: i2Coalition Applauds Congressional Efforts on ECPA Reform

Washington, DC –Internet Infrastructure Coalition (i2Coalition) Co-Founder and Board Chair Christian Dawson released the following statement regarding Congressional movement on ECPA reform:

“The Internet Infrastructure Coalition strongly supports the bipartisan ECPA reform legislation introduced by Senators Patrick Leahy and Mike Lee. The bill will bring ECPA into the Internet age by ensuring that citizens can expect the same due process rights with email and other electronic messaging as they do with more traditional forms of communication.

“By simply requiring that law enforcement follow well-established judicial procedures to access consumer data, the Senators’ proposal would strengthen American economic competitiveness by removing a key objection many non-U.S. companies have to entrusting that data to domestic infrastructure providers. These commonsense reforms will protect privacy while still providing law enforcement agencies with the tools necessary to do their jobs effectively.

“In addition to this action in the Senate, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte has said that updating ECPA will be one of his top priorities, and yesterday hearings were held by the House Judiciary’s subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations.  The i2Coalition applauds both Chambers of Congress for taking these reforms seriously.”
