SXSW Panel Picker: Vote Early, Vote Often
SXSW Interactive is scheduled for March 2014 in Austin, Texas and promises to be even more exciting than last year. The i2Coalition was proud to participate in the 2013 conference and next year we’re looking forward to being even more involved.
We’re participating in three panel discussions for the conference and we need your help! Please vote for our panels, “How the Internet is Turning Everyone Into a Libertarian,” “Terrorism Trumps Trade,” and “Online Privacy – Who’s Winning the War?” on the SXSW panel picker today!
How the Internet is Turning Everyone Into a Libertarian
Speakers: i2Coalition Public Policy Working Group Chair David Snead, Berin Szoka of Tech Freedom, and Greg Nojeim from the Center for Democracy and Technology.
In recent years, the debate over how to regulate and govern the Internet has been front and center. Whether discussing copyright, privacy, international trade or cybersecurity, many on the left and right have aligned by taking similar “libertarian” positions that any overreach of government regulation can significantly hinder innovation, American competiveness and businesses bottom lines. During this panel, we’ll discuss these new emerging political trends which often find libertarian conservatives and progressive liberals on the same page. VOTE!
Terrorism Trumps Trade
Speakers: i2Coalition Chair Christian Dawson, David Snead, and Alex deJoode of Leaseweb USA.
Edward Snowden’s disclosures did more than reveal the PRISM program, they upended Internet trade flows. Immediately after Snowden’s revelations Internet traffic began to be rerouted from the United States to other countries. This not only contradicts the fundamental principles underlying Internet routing, it undermines the ability of U.S. companies to compete in global markets. We’ll discuss how law enforcement activities are handled by Internet infrastructure providers, how global companies have used the disclosures to their advantage, and whether the “self-healing” nature of the Internet can survive. VOTE!
Online Privacy – Who’s Winning the War?
Speakers: i2Coalition Chair Christian Dawson, Berin Szoka of TechFreedom, Bryan Hughes from the Texas House of Representatives, and Ron Yokubaitis of Golden Frog, Inc.
Threats to online privacy are a global concern to all netizens. From government censorship that blocks content to legislation that hinders the Internet from being open and free to monitoring of online communications. Not to mention the data collected by Internet giants and who might be mining this data (as in the NSA). This panel explores online privacy issues and their impact to individuals and the economy, including the impact on cloud computing that relies on private and secure communications. The panel also examines governments’ role in online privacy and offers solutions that all netizens can embrace. VOTE!
