Internet Education Day Wrap-up
Thank you to all of the members and supporters who helped with our 2nd Annual Internet Education Day on Capitol Hill last week both in person and online. It was a busy two-days filled with events, Congressional meetings, and above all, discussing critical policy issues about the Internet.
Last Tuesday and Wednesday, we met with several Congressional offices about our public policy priorities, including ECPA reform, patent reform, and privacy. We kicked things off on Tuesday evening at our welcome reception and celebration at Ping Pong Dim Sum. Special thanks to the Consumer Electronic Association for sponsoring the event! Check out photos from the evening on our Facebook page.
During Internet Education Day on March 5, we formally launched our Best Practices Initiative. Our industry stands at the forefront in defending the Internet against cybercrime. The i2Coalition will serve as the clearinghouse for collecting and communicating Best Practices for our industry. In addition, we heard from Cindy Southworth, Vice President of National Network to End Domestic Violence, who discussed enhancing safety standards online. The NNEDV is just one group we’re collaborating with on our initiative. We recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Messaging, Malware and Mobile Anti-Abuse Working Group that Board Member Richard Feller of Hedgehog Hosting highlights on the i2Coalition blog.
We also heard from Ximena Hartsock, the President of Phone2Action, who showed us how we can easily communicate our support for ECPA reform to elected officials through a text message and Twitter. You can help today by asking your member of Congress to support a warrant requirement for email searches.
The i2Coalition was proud to present Representative Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) and Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) (video message) with this year’s “Champion of Internet Innovation” awards. Both have done a tremendous job advocating on behalf of the Internet and deserve recognition for their ongoing work.
Finally, thank you to all the members who attended Internet Education Day: Cheval Capital, cPanel, Data Foundry Inc., Endurance International Group, FireHost, Gandi.net, Hedgehog Hosting, Jumpline, Open Xchange, Parallels, PEER1, Rackspace, ServInt, and W. David Snead PC. Want to participate in next year’s activities? Learn more about joining the i2Coalition today!
