i2Coalition Signs onto SIIA Letter in Support of NIST Role in U.S. AI Policy

The Internet Infrastructure Coalition (i2Coalition) has joined a like-minded group of organizations in signing onto a letter by the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), emphasizing the critical role of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in maintaining U.S. leadership in the rapidly-evolving artificial intelligence industry. SIIA has now sent this letter to U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick.

The letter urges the Trump Administration to preserve and strengthen NIST’s work in AI standards, voluntary frameworks, and collaboration with the Internet infrastructure industry—which holds deep expertise in training, development, and deployment of AI.

The letter reads in part:

The work done at NIST is not just a matter of maintaining technical excellence; it is a direct investment in ensuring that American industry continues to set the global benchmark for innovation. Global competitors are ramping up their investments in AI and other emerging technologies, including efforts to shape and lead international standards. In this context, and as AI technologies rapidly evolve, sustained research and development efforts in standards and measurement science will be critical for the Administration’s goal to continue to lead in AI.

It continues:

A reshaped approach—one that aligns NIST’s world-leading expertise in standards and R&D with security and economic  imperatives—will ensure that America continues to lead in AI and other emerging technologies.
