Tech Platform Censorship: i2Coalition’s Response to FTC Call for Public Comments
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a call for public comments regarding censorship tactics by Internet platform providers, to get a better understanding of how these platforms limit users’ access due to what those users say online; and how consumers may have been harmed in the process. These platforms run the gamut from social media providers to rideshare and gig-economy apps.
While the i2Coalition does not typically address content moderation on the Internet, this call for comment gives us the opportunity to highlight a fundamental concern on behalf of our membership: regulatory efforts that conflate platform speech governance with the responsibilities of infrastructure providers risk undermining the stability, neutrality, and openness of the Internet itself.
Unclear or overreaching regulation presents a clear and present danger of eroding the foundational principles of the open Internet. You can read our full comment below.
